This is a service business a person can start with a minimal startup investment, as it is possible to begin with basic cleaning supplies many people already possess or can purchase cheaply. The most expensive of the startup expenses are often those related to business licensing, obtaining insurance and marketing to potential house cleaning customers.
1. Make a list of the services you will provide through your house cleaning service. You may, for example, provide basic house cleaning services, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms and disinfecting surfaces. You may also, however, decide to include laundry and window cleaning as added services.
2. Get some house cleaning experience. Despite the fact that you clean your own house, potential clients may want to know that you have experience cleaning other people's homes. You may sign on as a temporary helper with an established cleaning service or clean the homes of a few family members and friends to gain references.
3. Prepare a business plan for your cleaning business. List your plans for starting your business, finding clients and expanding your business later.
4. Secure business licensing for your house cleaning business. You can inquire about licensing with the organization that handles business licenses and registration in your city or town. For example, you may apply for a license with your city's department of licensing and inspection.
5. Choose a catchy name for your house cleaning business and register it with the business registration department or a similar agency in your area. If you will use your full name as your business name, you won't need to register it.
6. Obtain liability insurance. This will protect your assets in the event that your house cleaning business causes property damage or accidental injury in a client's home.
7. Get bonded through a local bonding agency. Bonding is special insurance that protects your clients in the event that you or your employees steal, commit fraud or fail to perform your cleaning work competently.
8. Obtain house cleaning supplies and equipment. You will typically need a sturdy broom, mop and bucket. You will also need a supply of cloths and sponges for cleaning and dusting, and an extension rod for dusting hard-to-reach areas. Purchase a selection of cleaners and disinfectants as well.
9. Seek customers for your house cleaning business. You may find customers by posting fliers on bulletin boards in grocery stores and libraries as well as at train stations. You may also place ads in local newspapers, purchase a display ad in a local phone directory and create a website for your business. Word-of-mouth advertising may prove helpful as well.
